Evergreen
Hospital Medical Center’s New Level III
Intensive Care Nursery Project Earns
Excellence in Construction Award
KIRKLAND
:
Strand
Hunt Construction has been awarded the 2002 Associated Builders and
Contractors’ Excellence in Construction Award for work on the
Evergreen
Hospital
Medical
Center
’s
new Level III Intensive Care Nursery and Family Maternity Center &
Children’s Services Unit. The
new state-of-the-art facility is providing much-needed services to
expecting families on the eastside.
Strand
Hunt’s Project
Manager Karen Frederickson and Superintendent
Don Korsmo diligently managed the crews to produce the stunning
new facility, which began construction in January of 2001 and was
dedicated on
January
17, 2002
.
The project renovated the 4th and 5th floors
of the hospital’s east wing, which was part of the 1990 hospital
expansion. The floors had
been used for storage prior to the start of construction.
Mahlum Architects of Seattle designed the new facility.
One
particularly challenging aspect of this project occurred early on in the
process. Plumbing for the 4th
and 5th floors had to be routed up from the 3rd
floor ceiling through the surgical suites.
Our crews created sealed work areas, one at a time, as they
accessed each operating room ceiling, maintaining the sterility of the
adjacent operating rooms. Strand
Hunt coordinated closely with the surgical staff to impact their schedule
as little as possible and procedures were ongoing in the neighboring
operating rooms throughout this phase of construction.
