Work began in December 2000 on transforming the existing shell of Evergreen Hospital’s East Wing 4th and 5th floors into a state-of-the-art Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and additional patient rooms. The two floors were part of the hospital’s expansion in 1990, but had been used for storage. The finished work will add a total of 74 new rooms.

The 4th floor has presented an interesting challenge for our crews as all of the plumbing had to be accessed and routed up to the floors above from the ceiling of the 3rd floor, where the surgical suites are located. Strand Hunt, working through a well-choreographed schedule with the hospital, created its own sealed-off workspace in order to access the ceiling of each operating room, one at a time, to do the necessary work on the plumbing. Temporary walls and security doors were put in place to maintain the sterility of the surgical suites on the other side of the walls – surgery was ongoing during construction in all rooms except the one currently being used to access the utilities!

"Mock-up" rooms were created to ensure the design and placement of cabinetry, access to gas lines and electrical outlets were at their most desired position – this led to major changes in of all room layouts, but resulted in time and money saved as only the mock-up room had to be changed, rather than making changes during the final stages of construction.

Construction is expected to be completed on the 4th floor by mid-October, and the new rooms open for hospital use in mid-November 2001.
