Northwest Airlines Replacement Hangar
Now Complete at
SeaTac
SeaTac:
The south end of SeaTac International Airport has a new look. Strand Hunt Construction, along with its joint venture
partner Walbridge Aldinger, recently completed the new Northwest Airlines
Maintenance Hangar and Air Cargo Facility.
The challenging $45 million project, completed in just ten months,
was preceded by the removal of an older Delta hangar/ground service
equipment facility from the site, building a new GSE facility for Delta,
and installing tunnel columns and a massive roof structure for a future
traffic tunnel that will cut across the southwest corner of the airport.
The new cargo facility was constructed over the roof of the future
tunnel.
The
two new structures total 207,647 square feet, required 4,500 tons of
structural steel and 30,000 cubic yards of concrete.
In January of this year, a giant box truss was jacked into position
by the steel subcontractor, The Erection Company of Seattle, which
represents the biggest lift in Strand Hunt history.
The truss, 384 feet in length, weighed 1,120 tons, and took 2 days
for the jackscrews to lift it 75 feet into position.
In
order to comply with the Port of Seattle’s redevelopment schedule,
Northwest Airlines was required to move out of their existing facilities
and into the new hangar and cargo buildings by July 1, 2001.
Contributing to the success of meeting this compressed schedule
were a host of talented subcontractors, Northwest Airlines, ECH
Architecture, Skilling Ward Magnusson Barkshire structural engineers,
Bouillon mechanical/electrical engineers, and the Port of Seattle.
Strand
Hunt Construction of Kirkland has been delivering quality projects in the
Pacific Northwest, Alaska and Hawaii for nearly half a century.
Strand Hunt is now working on the new Redmond High School project,
a new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and patient rooms at Evergreen
Hospital, SeaTac Cooling Towers, and will be commencing work shortly on
the new Seattle Crime Laboratory.
